President
Steven Halling, PresidentSteven Halling has more than 20 years of marketing experience working in a broad range of companies, from small agencies to large enterprise. Most recently, Steve was the Director of Brand Strategy for IBM's Lotus, Workplace and Portal software business, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In this role, Steve lead cross-functional teams from throughout IBM in the development and execution of strategic brand and product positioning programs.
Steve had joined Lotus Development in 1993, which was acquired by IBM in 1995. At Lotus, he managed an award-winning marketing communications team, and later served as Managing Director of Lotusphere, IBM's largest customer and business partner loyalty event. He then was assigned the role of managing the Lotus brand, which gradually grew to include several related IBM software brands. Steve was a manager on the IBM team that led the unified IBM software brand strategy work. More recently, he was leading the planning and roll-out of the new IBM Workplace brand.
Prior to joining Lotus, Steve was General Manager of a Boston-based events firm, and before that, creative director/producer at several smaller marketing agencies located throughout the U.S. At these agencies, he planned and implemented marketing programs for Fortune 500 companies around the world. During his career he has won more than 30 industry awards for creative excellence. He attended school at Hennepin College in Minneapolis, majoring in Media Communications. He has also completed advanced management development programs in IBM and at Babson College. Steve is a member of the American Marketing Association and the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
Currently, Steve is building a new business working with companies to develop marketing communications programs aimed at breakthrough growth.
Responsibilities of the President
The president is the chief executive officer of the chapter.He/she performs all duties specified by the Constitution and Bylaws approved by the Board of Directors.Except in emergency situations, the president serves one year each as president-elect, president and immediate past president.
- Provide leadership and overall direction for the chapter.
- Attend the Chapter Leadership Summit and strongly encourage incoming officers to attend.
- Coordinate with vice presidents (committee chairs) to establish measurable and achievable chapter objectives for the year.
- Conduct chapter meetings.
- Call and conduct monthly Board meetings.
- Appoint committee chairs and participate as ex-officio member of all committees.
- Continually maintain and assess chapter policy in cooperation with the Board of Directors.
- Develop an organizational chart including all elected and appointed positions and depicting relationships.

- Prepare the chapter for the following year by serving on the nominating committee for the election of chapter officers and supervising elections.
- Present the annual budget and plan to the Board of Directors for approval, and submit two copies to AMA International Headquarters by date required (August.

- Prepare the year-end financial report and submit to AMA International Headquarters by date required (August).
- Participate in preparing the Chapter Excellence Awards entry.
- Assume the responsibilities common to all board members.
The Board of Directors is the official governing body of the chapter and manages all business and property of the chapter. Most importantly, Board members should enjoy their service and build meaningful relationships with their peers and marketers across the country. Plus, attend events at no charge.
- Promote the ideals and goals of AMA.
- Do not reinvent the wheel but take advantage of resources provided by the AMA network.
- Manage chapter affairs with the president and other officers.
- Attend monthly board meetings, which are 2 hours in length each and held in Waltham and downtown Boston.
- Serve on one or more committees, whose work is done between board meetings.
- Help make chapter policy.
- Advise the president and other officers.
- Help plan and/or review the annual chapter budget and plan.
- Coordinate with other officers, directors and committee chairs as needed.
- Support membership drives and spread the word about events.
- The general board has no required role in fundraising.
- Members of the Board serve for at least one year.
- Three consecutive absences may mean dismissal from board, at discretion of board.
