Derek has been an active member of the American Marketing Association since college, when he created the Boston Chapter's first stand-alone web site. He has since served the Boston Chapter as Vice President of Online Communications, President-Elect, President, and Past-President/Advisor.
Derek is currently the Northeast Marketing Manager for Dean Foods, the largest dairy company in the United States. His previous consumer marketing experience includes positions with Garelick Farms and entrepreneurial venture MEDport/The Ocean Group, as well as a variety of freelance projects, including assisting local musicians and artists promote themselves. In addition, he has experience in business-to-business marketing through his role as Marketing Manager at Mech-Chem Associates and Donnelly & Duncan Advertising.
In addition to his continued involvement with the Boston Chapter of the AMA, he is also a member of the Rhode Island AMA Chapter, serves on the Massachusetts Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk Committee, and is an active member of Boston Chapter of Fast Company magazine's Company of Friends.
He is a graduate of Johnson & Wales University, where he was the first graduate of the school's Honors program, and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Marketing and a concentration in Leadership Studies. He remains active in alumni affairs with Johnson & Wales University.
Derek also enjoys the opportunity to share experiences and ideas with college and high school students, having spoken in classes at Boston University, Boston College, Rhode Island School of Design, Stonehill College, Emerson College, Clark University, and Johnson & Wales.
When not doing all of the above, he enjoys fulfilling his duties as a Kansas City Barbecue Society-certified barbecue judge, cheering on his beloved New England sports teams, keeping up with the strange but fascinating world of pop culture, traveling, developing the next great business idea (which he thinks he just might have), writing in his blog, and listening to an almost unnaturally wide range of music.
