Richard F. Spears

Born and raised in Brookline, MA, Richard F. Spears graduated from Brookline High in 1934 and received his baccalaureate degree from Northeastern University in 1938. After World War II, Spears worked for Stop & Shop, Inc., retiring after 42 years as the Corporate Vice President.
Spears, president of the AMA Boston chapter from 1950 thru 1951, co-authored “How to Measure a Trading Area” with William Applebaum, which was published in Chain Store Age in January of 1951. Richard F. Spears, active member of Piney Point Association and honorary member of Cooperative Research Group, died on January 31, 1999.

WAREHAM -- Richard F. Spears, of Marion, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Tobey Hospital. Mr. Spears was born in Brookline and was a 1938 graduate of Northeastern University. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and began a career with Stop & Shop following the war, retiring after 42 years as corporate vice president. He remained active in his industry as an honorary member of the Cooperative Research Group. He was an active member of the Piney Point Association, serving on various committees. He actively enjoyed his membership in the Cape Cod Curling Club of Falmouth. Survivors include three sons, Richard M. Spears of Arvada, Colo., Peter F. Spears of Rye Beach, N.H., and Robert M. Spears of Bellevue, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in St. Gabriel Church, 124 Front St., Marion. Arrangements are by the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove St., Attleboro.
